Why Myotonic Goats?
Making the choice of the Myotonic Goat breed was an easy one!
These goats have a quiet, friendly disposition, they are highly adaptable and trainable as well as having an exceptional mothering ability. They are gentle on the landscape as great foragers and have natural parasite resistance. Due to their stiffening/fainting tendencies, these goats are valued for their ease on fencing. They do not challenge fencing like other breeds and rarely jump or climb onto things. We wanted a breed that would mingle with the rest of our farm family, i.e. horses, cattle, chickens, cats and dogs. Our goats are introduced to human contact at a very young age as well as exposed to other farm animals.
Note: Our herd is tested annually for CL, CAE and Johnes
We have a clean, closed herd. New additions only come from the same type of herd.
I find it hard to ever tell this handsome man, no :)

The Big Question,
Why do they faint?
The Myotonic Goat is an American breed of goat. The original animals were brought to Tennessee in 1880, before that their exact origin is a mystery. They have a hereditary condition known as myotonia congenita. This is an inherited disorder of a chloride channel in skeletal muscles. Without having to go into a lot of detail, once the muscles are stimulated, there is a delay in relaxation resulting in stiffness/fainting. This condition is also present in humans and is said to be nonpainful.
Why participate in shows/purchase animals that have succeeded in shows?
We find it important that our breeding stock meets or even excels the breed standards and has excellent conformation. Although our primary focus is not as exhibitors, we like getting feedback from judges. This feedback helps us choose the right breeding stock to continue breeding quality purebred animals. This breed of goat is regularly used for crossbreeding with other meat goats. Rather than cross breeding for meat production, we decided our farm will become dedicated to preserving the traditional purebred lines.
